- Footrace, Pennsylvania Avenue. Stakes $25,000 [graphic]. Footrace, Pennsylvania Avenue. Stakes $25,000 [graphic]. N.Y. : Litho. & pubd. by James Baillie, 1844. 1 print : lithograph with watercolor, on wove paper ; 31.9 x 44.9 cm. (image) still image sti rdacontent unmediated n rdamedia Digital image computer c rdamedia sheet nb rdacarrier Digital image online resource cr rdacarrier Entered . . . 1844 by J. Baillie. Litho. & pubd. by James Baillie 118 Nassau St N.Y. Signed: H. Bucholzer. The Library's impression of the print was deposited for copyright on August 23, 1844. Title appears as it is written on the item. Weitenkampf, p. 79. The race for a $25,000 prize (the president's salary) is a metaphor for the 1844 campaign. The favored contender here is Henry Clay. The other runners are James K. Polk and John Tyler, while commentaries are offered by a farmer, vice presidential candidate Theodore Frelinghuysen, and Whig stalwart Daniel Webster. The print probably appeared before Tyler officially withdrew as a presidential candidate on August 20. Henry Clay is in the lead, about to pass the half-mile marker to the White House. The Capitol appears in the distance. Clay holds an American flag in one hand and a document in the other, and begins to ascend the steeply inclined final stretch. Behind him Democratic nominee James K. Polk stumbles and falls, his foot in a pothole. Clay: "Clear the Road for Old Kentuck!" Polk: "Oh! Lord I've slipped up! I've got fundamental objections to this mode of coming down." Frelinghuysen: "Ha! Ha! Dan there goes Polk! that Tariff grease that I put there has done the business slick!" Support for a tariff was a plank in the Whig platform which was extremely popular in the Northeast. Webster replies: "Why Theodore, Harry [Clay] is a going it in fine style. He'll take the Purse & not half try!" A third contestant, incumbent President John Tyler, notices a woman traveling down another road toward Texas. The woman is elegantly dressed, and holds a parasol which obstructs the view ahead of her. Tyler questions a farmer standing nearby, "I say my friend who is that going down the road yonder . . ." The farmer replies "Oh! thats the Gardeners Daughter that lives in yon house there down the road!" "Well thats the road for me," Tyler continues, "I am used up in the Race. So I'm off! tell them Gentlemen that they must excuse me." No known restrictions on publication. Published by J. Sage & Sons 209 Main St. Buffalo N.Y. Title appears as it is written on the item. Weitenkampf, p. 121-122. Wilson, p. 20-21. Rival presidential nominees Lincoln and Douglas are matched in a footrace, in which Lincoln's long stride is a clear advantage. Both sprint down a path toward the U.S. Capitol, which appears in the background right. They are separated from it by a rail fence, a reference to Lincoln's popular image as a rail-splitter. Douglas, whose characteristic shortness is here exaggerated to dwarfish dimensions, wonders aloud, "How can I get over this Rail Fence." Over his shoulder he carries a cane on which hangs a jug marked "M.C.," which probably refers to the Missouri Compromise, repealed in 1854 largely through Douglas's efforts. As he runs, playing cards spill from his pockets (suggesting perhaps a penchant for gambling). Lincoln, whose height is equally exaggerated, runs along beside him waving his hat and carrying a rail-splitter's maul over his shoulder. He says confidently, "It [i.e., the rail fence] can't sto\p me for I built it." From the fence on the far right a black youth taunts Douglas, "You can find me in dis yer Fence Massa Duglis." The last is evidently a reference to the slavery question central to the election campaign. The print probably appeared late in the campaign, as the Library's impression was deposited for copyright on September 21, 1860. The footrace image is also used in a similar cartoon discussed by Wilson, entitled "A Political Race" (Wilson, p. 52). No known restrictions on publication. Detroit, MI : Gale Research, c1983, no. 2840 Weitenkampf, p. 109 Satire on the presidential election of 1852, showing Winfield Scott, Daniel Webster, and Franklin Pierce competing in a footrace before a crowd of onlookers for a $100,000 prize (the four-year salary for a president) and "pickings." In the lead is Webster, who exclaims, "I can beat you both, and "walk in" at that although you had a hundred yards the start of me!!" Denied the Whig nomination in June, Webster was later persuaded to run as an independent candidate. Directly behind Webster appears Whig nominee Winfield Scott, in military uniform. Scott says, "Confound Webster! what does he want to get right in my way for? if he dont give out, or Pierce dont faint I shall be beaten." Democratic candidate Franklin Pierce trails both of them, yelling, "No! No! old Fuss and Feathers [Scott's nickname], you dont catch this child fainting now. I'm going in to make good time! whether I win or not, Legs! do your duty." Onlookers standing behind a fence in the background cheer the contestants on. Their comments include: "Go it Dan! put in the "big licks." [In an exaggerated Irish brogue], "Arrah be Jabers! an is it ould Dannil, thats to . . . he'll come out fore nint the whole o'thim." "I'm fraid the Ex pounder is too old for such a severe race." "Old! my dear fellow don't you know that it is the Blood that tells, age dont matter I'd back old Dan against Lady Suffolk herself." (Lady Suffolk was a premiere race horse of the day). "Scott ought to pass, he's got a long Stride." "Yes, but Dan . . . gathers well." The cartoon must have originated between June 5, when Franklin Pierce won the Democratic nomination, and September, when Webster effectively retired an invalid to his estate at Marshfield.
