Christlieb's books, 'Remembrance of Lawrence Morton' (1987) and 'Recollections of a First Chair Bassoonist: 52 Years in the Hollywood Studio Orchestras' (1996), as well as his treatise 'Notes on the Bassoon Reed: Machinery, Measurement, Analysis' (1966), are available by request in the Library of Congress Performing Arts Reading Room. The Library made 8 x 10 black and white prints, and the original photos were returned to Christlieb. The Photographs series contains prints made by the Library of Congress in 1992 from 32 of Don Christlieb's original black and white photographs. These images depict acquaintances and colleagues on Hollywood movie sets and in recording studios, as well as jazz bands from the 1920s. Notable figures Christlieb photographed include Aaron Copland, Bernard Herrmann, Ken Darby, Oscar Hammerstein, II, Henry Mancini, Alfred Newman, Igor Stravinsky, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Oct. 10, 1912, Fullerton, Calif. - d. Feb. 16, 2001, Sherman Oaks, Calif.) was an American bassonist. He spent most of his musical career in Southern California, where he served as principal bassoonist with the Fox and MGM movie studios. He recorded hundreds of film scores, playing the first bassoon part for films such as "Gone With the Wind" (1939), "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), "A Christmas Carol" (1938), "Jane Eyre" (1944), and "North by Northwest" (1959). Christlieb also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Glendale Symphony, and he was a founding member of the Los Angeles Woodwinds. In addition to these performing activities, Christlieb wrote two influential treatises on bassoon reed-making and acoustics: "Notes on the Bassoon Reed" (1945) and "Measuring the Conical Bore of the Bassoon: A Clinical Report" (1968).
